Lion conservation and rehabilitation has been in the news recently. Not surprising really with an drop of almost 90% of the lion population in some areas of Africa. But what does a volunteer working with lions in Africa actually get up to?

In Africa, the day tends to start quite early, usually with a lion walk. This isn’t some pet on a leash, and you’re not sat watching from a vehicle, this is walking right alongside lions that can be anything from four to eighteen months old – and an eighteen month old lion is a substantial creature! The job here is to get them used to being out in the bush, to build their confidence and to practice their hunting skills.

You’ll stop for a hearty breakfast around 9 am, after which you could well be off to one of the local schools. Lion conservation isn’t just about the lions themselves, it’s also important to educate local children so that when they grow up they will help with the effort rather than persecuting these wonderful beasts. Alternatively you might be cleaning lion enclosures (yep, it has to be done – but don’t worry, you won’t be doing it every day) or you might be out in the bush with a local guide conducting a game census.

You’ll have an hour, or an hour and a half for lunch and then it could be more lion walks, working with local ecologists, important maintenance tasks around the captive breeding and rehabilitation center, preparation for other educational trips… you are guaranteed not to get bored!

Around 6.45 you will be briefed by managers about the following days adventures and then it’s dinner. The rest of the evening is yours to socialize with other volunteers, maybe relax with a couple of beers or explore the local night life. This might be Africa and working with lions but they don’t dump you in the middle of nowhere – except if you’ve chosen to spend a night out in the bush, which everyone ought to do at least once.

Usually conserving water is a painful process. Low flow toilets conserve water, but most people who have used them complain about their operation…needing to flush multiple times etc. How about low flow shower heads and faucets? Again, for most of us it’s not a painless way to conserve water. It’s emotionally painful, at least for me. How about all those brown yards with dead lawns? And not being able to wash your car…that’s painful isn’t it?

Well the good news is there is a way to save a lot of water without the pain and it’s called a hot water demand system! In fact, this way of saving water is actually a convenience for the user. It’s called a hot water demand system (or demand hot water system), and it can save a typical family of 4 up to 16,000 gallons of water per year according to one manufacturer, and 10,000 gallons per year according to another.

A hot water demand system consists of a small pump that mounts under the sink in a bathroom or kitchen. When the user “demands” hot water, by pressing a button, the pump begins pumping water out of the water heater, and when the hot water reaches the pump, the pump shuts off. The cooled-off hot water in the hot water pipes is pumped into the cold water line, and back into the water heater inlet. It just pumps the water in a big loop out of the heater and back in. Since the pump shuts off when hot water reaches the pump, little if any hot water makes it into the cold water line.

Since the pump only runs for a very short time, typically less than a minute, it uses very little electricity. Usually these pumps use less than a dollar or two per year of electricity. With some of the systems the pumps are powerful enough that you get your hot water in half the normal time.

If you have a tankless water heater then you are probably wasting even more water waiting for the hot to arrive, since a tankless water heater takes time to heat the water and a storage tank type heater does not. However, it takes a certain amount of flow to turn on a tankless water heater so you must be sure the pump you purchase has enough power.

There are a number of hot water circulating systems on the market, and not all of them are “demand” systems. Traditional circulating systems require a separate return line for the hot water, and the pumps run continuously. These traditional systems use a tremendous amount of energy keeping the hot water pipes full of hot water. The water heater has to work a lot harder and can wear out much more quickly. Tankless systems won’t work with traditional hot water circulating systems.

There are also a class of circulating systems that are kind of half way between the traditional system and the demand system. They use the cold water line as the return line like real demand systems, but they operate on a temperature cycle like some traditional systems. That is, when the water cools down to a pre-determined temperature the pump turns on, and when the water reaches a pre-determined high temperature the pump shuts off. The pump cycles on and off continuously keeping the water in the pipes kind of luke warm. These systems will not work with tankless water heaters either. The pumps are too small to pump enough water to turn them on.

These temperature controlled cold water return line systems also use a lot of energy since they keep the hot water (and cold water) pipes full of warm water. They aren’t as bad as the full time traditional systems, but they consume one heck of a lot more energy than a true demand system.

When considering purchasing such a system be sure to check with your local water company and or city government to see if any rebates are being offered. There are water companies that offer rebates, and some rebate as much as $200.00 per home. That’s actually more than the retail price for at least one brand of demand system.

Water conservation is by far the most effective method to help reduce the demand on our water supply and save energy.  This is a huge help to areas that are struggling with water shortages and droughts, such as California.  For the third year in a row, California is faced with little precipitation and critically low reservoirs.  Here are some of the most effective ways you can conserve water in your home and make a difference on your community’s water supply.

A huge unintentional waste of water is when people water part of their grass, and their sidewalk or driveway because of improperly positioned sprinklers.  This can misuse up to five hundred gallons a month.  Also, overwatering is a problem.  If your grass springs back after you step on it, it doesn’t need to be watered.  Using a hose to water your lawn or garden instead of sprinklers is another way to save as much as fifteen hundred gallons a month.  Or if you don’t really like having grass, convert you lawn into plants native to the area so you don’t have to water at all.  If you need to clean your sidewalks or driveway, using a broom to do so can save more than a hundred and fifty gallons each time.  Another hundred and fifty gallons can be saved each time you wash your car if you use a bucket and sponge to do so and only turn on the hose to rinse at the end.

How many people turn on the faucet and wait for the water to warm up?  Filling a bucket with that extra water can be helpful later for watering houseplants or outdoors on your lawn.  As small a step as this may seem to be, it can save up to three hundred gallons a month.  Most people have heard that shortening their showers can save on water, but did you know that even a two minute reduction can save up to seven hundred gallons a month?  Save even more by installing water-conscious shower heads.

Another small change that makes a large difference is fixing any leaks in your plumbing.  You can save up to six hundred gallons a month for each leaky faucet you fix.  Another six hundred gallons can be saved by not using the toilet as an ashtray or wastebasket.  When was the last time you ran just one item in the laundry?  Running full loads only in the dishwasher and washing machine can have a big impact, upwards of eight hundred gallons a month.  It doesn’t take a lot of changes in your lifestyle to make a lot of difference in the amount of water you conserve.  Not only will you be ensuring there is enough water for the whole community, but you will also be lowering your own water and electricity bills at the same time.  Why not conserve water?

NASA’s International Space Station has very limited resources.  This includes water.  For astronauts there, water recycling is the only feasible option.  Many people don’t realize it, but water is in limited supply on earth also.  Only about three percent of the world is fresh water, and of that two percent is unavailable in polar ice caps, so only one percent of the world’s water is fit for human consumption.

In the United States, the average household uses three hundred and fifty gallons of water a day.  That may not seem like much, but when you multiply it out over a year that amounts to 127,400 gallons.  That’s a lot of water.  Of that, in some homes almost seventy percent is used for watering lawns and gardens.  Because of the finite nature of our usable water and the current rate with which we use it, it makes sense that so many government and environmental groups are calling for more water conservation.  Water is precious stuff.  While it is technically possible to make water chemically, the amount of energy needed makes it an impractical solution

“Utilities enforce and promote water restrictions through rates, municipal ordinances, federal laws and regulations, and financial incentives.”  One example of this is only allowing the public to water their lawns on certain days.  Or by not allowing home car washing with a hose.  Some counties only permit water fountains that use recirculated water.  As far as financial incentives, some counties offer them to consumers that install more efficient or low-flow plumbing or change out their lawn for resilient plants that require less watering.  The country’s average for recycling wastewater is only 2.3%.  However, in areas that are plagued more frequently by drought, that percentage may be as high as twenty-five percent.

Since scientists are unable to predict droughts or the length and severity of droughts, beginning and maintaining water conservation measures and programs is the only way to ensure that our area is prepared if a drought does occur.  Using wastewater for irrigation or similar work, shortening showers, conservation efforts at businesses, Aquifer Storage and Recover (ASR) programs, and other responsible consumer actions can all help.  Water conservation isn’t just another environmentally friendly thing we “ought to do”.  It is vital to ensure there is enough water for our children and grandchildren.

Lion conservation is vital work. The king of the jungle is not invincible. Sadly the lion is in grave danger across Africa and it’s man who is causing the damage. Fortunately the opportunity exists to help try to redress the balance and a lion walk is just one of the benefits.

Figures tell us that lion population in Africa has dropped from something in the region of 200,000 in 1975 to less than 40,000 today. That’s a huge decline in just thirty years. When you see pictures on the TV of a pack of lions bring down a Wildebeast it’s difficult to think of them as “vulnerable” isn’t it? But that is the official listing.

So what can be done? And what’s this about lions walks?

One exciting program in Zambia, Zimbabwe and South Africa is run by the African Lion & Environmental Research Trust (ALERT), a non-profit organization dedicated to the conservation of the African lion. They rehabilitate lions, using both rescued and those originally captive bred, to breed “wild” offspring for release into the relatively safe surroundings of some of Africa’s national parks. The breeding program is highly monitored for correct welfare and animal husbandry and has received many accolades.

Of course there is never enough money for this kind of work. Luckily, there are volunteer placements available and many people from all over the world take what could be described as working vacations in order to do their bit. One of the spin-offs is the lion walk, taking daily exercise with these magnificent beasts as they learn to hunt. Whilst full-grown adults aren’t part of the deal, these are far more than just cubs!

African lion conservation volunteers do much more than just have a stroll in the bush though. The proper care of these animals is paramount but there’s also a lot of work to do to teach local tribes people about the program. The last thing that ALERT want is to release a young lion back into the wild only to have it trapped or killed by a well-meaning but misinformed local Zulu warrior.

So education support is an important part of the lion volunteer’s task. There’s also important data-checking and record-keeping to be done so it’s not all cuddling cubs. On the other hand, lion conservation volunteers do get time off to go bungee jumping off Victoria Falls or white water rafting on the Zambezi!

The fact is that volunteering to help rehabilitate African lions has tremendous rewards – not least the lion walk – but it’s also hard work from time to time. It’s not a vacation for the lazy or those that are afraid to get their hands dirty. Sure you could just go lie on a beach for a month for the same money, but for those that love wildlife and want what they do to have real impact and real long-lasting value might want to investigate what could become the adventure of a lifetime.

How many times have we see interesting historical sites damaged by abandonment and misuse? Each country needs to protect its historic locations. Because things like shops, stadiums and highways can be built again. But a historic place which is neglected and misused will lose its attraction and gradually fall into rubble. And no amount of steps take and attention can ever bring a historic location back to its previous charm because it has been totally neglected and damaged by us. The oldest of historic places can be kept for the next generation if we follow a correct plan for their maintenance.

Maintaining historic places must have a well planned approach. If the historic place is looked after with the aid of a correct plan, it will lead to spectacular results. While coming up with a plan for the conservation of historic places, it’s critical to maintain the costs within limits. Hot water plumbing systems

The hot water plumbing is another story. The pipes end up full of hot water after each use, then cooling off, wasting a huge amount of energy.  Then the cooled off hot water in the pipes from the previous use must be purged in order to obtain hot water at the fixture the next time it’s used. This is not a good way to provide water conservation.

If the water heater is located a long way from the point of use, the water temperature will be lower at the fixture than at the outlet of the tank due to the heat energy lost along the length of the pipe.

Pipe Insulation

Insulating the hot water piping contributes to efficient plumbing.  Since while you wait for the hot water to arrive, you are wastefully running water down the drain, minimizing the wait for hot water will minimize the amount of water being wasted.

Part of the delay in the arrival of hot water is due to the fact that the piping material absorbs the heat from the water as it travels through the pipe, so when the hot water arrives it has already cooled off and you have to wait a little longer.  The longer the piping run is the worse the problem becomes.

By insulating the pipes, they do not get as cold and thus they absorb less heat from the hot water traveling to the fixture. Your hot water reaches you faster and you run less water down the drain. Insulating your pipes contributes to water conservation.

The temperature drop long the pipe on those long runs is less due to the insulation, resulting in more energy efficiency.

Point-of-use tankless water heaters

Tankless water heaters are seen as green products these days, but you have to be careful about opting for tankless.  Due to the capacity limitations and temperature rise limitations on tankless heaters, they generally best used as point of use water heaters. In other words they would be located at the fixture or fixtures where the hot water is to be used.

Point of use water heaters eliminate that long pipe run, virtually eliminating the energy and water wastage attributable to the distribution piping.

Hot water demand systems

If point-of-use water heating is not feasible with your plumbing layout, then consider a hot water demand pumping system. A hot water demand system is a pumping system similar to a standard hot water circulating system, except the pump only comes on when you demand hot water by pressing a button.

Pressing the button causes a small pump mounted under the fixture furthest from the water heater to begin pumping the hot water from the water heater to the fixture at high speed, turning off when it detects the arrival of hot water.

Then when you turn on the fixture you have instant hot water and no water was run down the drain. Demand systems only consume about $1 to $2 per year in electricity to run. Some models are under $200 retail, and are very easy to install, they hook up with hoses. They save you time, water, and money.
